July 30 Update

With plans to move forward and begin practice next week with the Junior High teams, we have several important updates to ensure everyone gets off to a safe start and we are all on the same page. Please take the time to read this email and the attachments that outline protocols for practice / games and COVID-19.

Pee-Wee Cheer: 2nd/3rd/4th grades will be combined into one squad and 5th/6th grade will be combined. Practices will begin August 19th and will be every Wednesday from 6-7:30 PM with Alter Cheerleaders (in front of school). There will be no deviation from this schedule for 2020. You will be temperature screened prior to each practice in front of the school.

Pee-Wee Football: The only news we have to report is that due to the situation outlined in our communication earlier this week, we will combining 3rd/4th grade and 5th/6th grade. We have chosen to do this for two reasons: there will be no scrimmaging between grades permitted this year so that we can isolate teams from one another; and we will not allow players to "play-up" for another team that is short players.

We will have specific dates/times published next week for pee-wee weigh-ins, practice schedule, etc. Pee-wees can begin optional conditioning the week of August 10th. The days and times will be determined by the coaches of each team.

Jr. High Football & Cheer Schedules: Well, the schedules have blown up overnight. Now that the OHSAA has ruled "no scrimmages," that removes two early August events. We hope to re-add the teams mid-season. Also, with the news that Dayton Public Schools will start school online, we are unsure what this means for athletics. We will let you know as soon as we hear more.

Jr High Cheer: Practices will begin next Wednesday (5th) from 6:30-8:00 in front of Alter. The time is just for the first practice because the Varsity cheerleaders have a practice running concurrently. Following next week, practice will take place every Wednesday from 6-7:30. There will no deviation from this schedule for 2020. You will be temperature screened prior to each practice (in front of the school).

Jr High Football: This is the second notice that we will not be practicing on Saturday as originally planned. Instead, we will begin Monday (3rd) at 6. Please show up at 5:45 to be screened and to turn in a signed Lindsay's Law form and an active completed physical form. If both are not turned in, your son will not be able to practice. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Helmets will be distributed to players at the first practice; however, we will not hand out other equipment until Friday's practice. Practices for next week are as follows:

Week #1

Monday: 6:00 - 8:00 (shorts and cleats)
Tuesday: 6:00 - 8:00 (shorts and cleats)
Wednesday: 6:00 - 8:00 (shorts and cleats)
Thursday: 6:00 - 8:00 (shorts and cleats)
Friday: 6:00 - 8:00 (shoulder pads and practice jersey)
Saturday: 9:00 - 11:00 (shoulder pads, practice jersey, pants and all pads

Week #2
Monday: 6:00 - 8:00 (full gear moving forward)

Tuesday: 6:00 - 8:00
Wednesday: 6:00 - 8:00
Thursday: 6:00 - 8:00
Friday: 6:00 - 8:00
Saturday: 9:00 - 11:00

Please take note of the special rules for the 2020 Season:

The following special rules / protocols will be in place for the 2020 SDK Football & Cheer season:

  • Players / Cheerleaders should not show up earlier than 15 minutes prior to practice
  • All players, cheerleaders, coaches and volunteers who are participating in practice / games must be screened (temp and questions). Football players will screen at the entrance to the Equipment Room by the football fields, and cheerleaders will screen in front of the high school. Anyone skipping the screening process will be sent home. Away games will be handled at the opponent's home site.
  • No co-mingling with other teams or squads prior to practice or following practice
  • No scrimmaging other grades during the season
  • Each person must bring own water. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL WATER JUGS BE SHARED
  • Every participant must bring masks.
  • Coaches, volunteers must wear masks.
  • No longer than 15 minutes of full team at any one time
  • When not on the field, players must socially distance
  • Players that show up more than 10 minutes late will not be screened and will not be able to practice with team for that evening
  • Players must immediately shower upon returning home
  • Practice jerseys must be regularly washed
  • Equipment should be regularly sanitized

PLEASE GO OVER ALL THE RULES ABOVE WITH YOUR SON SO THAT THERE ARE NO ISSUES.

COVID - 19 PROTOCOLS

THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES WILL BE STRICTLY ADHERED TO DURING THE 2020 SEASON. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO ADJUST / ADD ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES AS NEEDED. PLEASE KNOW THAT IN ALL CASES, WE WILL RULE ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION.

Symptoms / Testing

Prior to any practice / game, every SDK player, cheerleader, coach or volunteer will have his / her temperature taken and will complete a questionnaire. All questionnaires will be saved for department of health audits as well as contact tracing. Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or any symptoms from the questionnaire will not be admitted.

In the event that we learn of a positive test on a team / squad, we will follow the health department's recommendations:

  • Go back 48 hours from the positive test date if asymptomatic or 48 hours from the symptom(s) onset if symptomatic, and contact trace. Identify any person that was closer than six feet to the infected person for 15 minutes or longer.
  • Those that are identified as meeting that criteria will have to quarantine until:
    1. They have received a negative COVID-19 test result (if asymptomatic)
    2. 10 days have elapsed with no symptoms
  • The person who initially tested positive will have to have a negative COVID-19 test result prior to returning to the team / squad.

Communication Chain:

  • Any player, cheerleader, coach or volunteer who suspects he/she may have COVID-19 or becomes symptomatic should immediately self-quarantine and notify one of the following people immediately: Chris Harshbarger (football | 937-776-5362), Dave Homan (football | 937-430-4429) or Amy Homan (cheer | 937-304-6236). We will require the person to contact his/her doctor for further instructions. At that point, we will communicate the following to the team/squad as much as we know without breaching any protected health information.
  • In the event we receive notice there is a positive COVID-19 test result, we will first reach out to anyone who is impacted via contact tracing. Then, once they have been notified and been given instructions, we will send out a program-wide email communicating the grade / squad and that there is a positive case and those impacted have been notified.
  • Depending on the timing of the event, we may contact a recent opponent (for football players) to notify them of the positive test.

    Conversely, we could receive notification from an opponent that they had a player test positive. If this occurs, we will follow the same communication protocols.

Positive Test(s) During Season

Any team with more than one positive test will immediately cause the team to cease all play for two weeks from the time the second COVID test is identified. Prior to anyone from that team returning to practice / play, we will triage the team / squad.

Our goal is to be as transparent as possible with everyone. We know that you are entrusting your son/daughter to us, and their safety is our number one priority. If you have questions or concerns throughout the season, we encourage you to ask. We can't promise we will have all the answers, but we will find quickly track them down.

Be patient. Be hopeful. Be cautious.

Also, Junior High Football will be starting on Monday, not Saturday, in order to give us two extra days to file our plans and prepare for practices.

JULY 23 UPDATE

This week has felt amazing at Alter Football Camp. Sure, it's been a little different with masks and other safety protocols; but it is the closest thing to "normal" that we have experienced over the past few months. We have learned so much about what works and what needs to be adjusted - now it's time to carry over those lessons over to SDK Football & Cheer.

As we move closer to practices starting, we want to go over a few things that are important to keep in mind:

  • We will be fielding the following teams at this point:
    1. 3rd/4th grade
    2. 5th grade
    3. 6th grade
    4. 7th grade
    5. 8th grade
  • 7th and 8th grade (Junior High) will begin practices on August 1st. Pee-wees are not permitted to begin practices until August 18th due to delayed start to their season. That being said, optional conditioning sessions can be scheduled by pee-wee coaches at their discretion between August 3rd - 18th.
  • Acclimation for Jr. High will be as follows: August 1st - helmets ; August 3rd - helmets; August 4th - helmets and shells; August 5th - helmets and shells; August 6th - helmets, shells and pants. Any missed practice during acclimation will set a player back from full participation with the team.
  • Junior High Cheer will begin the week of August 3rd and pee-wee cheer will begin the week of August 18th.
  • Just as with the Alter Football Camp, all players and cheerleaders will need to provide their own water jugs. No onsite water will be available.
  • All football players and cheerleaders will be temperature and symptom checked upon arriving to practices.
  • All football players must have an active physical on file in order to practice. If you need a physical form, you can find it at sdkfootball.com under forms. Don't worry if the date on the form is from last year - we have used the same form since 2010. Cheerleaders do not need to have sports physicals.
  • We will not condition the week of July 27th.
  • All player, cheerleaders and coaches will need to bring masks to practices and games. We will review with the kids when the masks need to be worn.

Much more information will be forthcoming, but we wanted to start pushing out the information that we know at this point. We ask for your patience as things remain fluid with the league and the state.

JULY 10th UPDATE

We are cancelling conditioning next week for a couple of reasons: 1) the heat has not relented and the forecast calls for temps next Thursday to be 96. When it is this hot, the kids are not focused. 2) we are still working on plans with coaches and staff/volunteers to ensure that we are doing everything the right way regarding safety.

Additionally, when we first set equipment handout dates, we didn't realize that our start would be push back somewhat; therefore, we are holding off to distribute equipment until junior high and pee wee players begin practicing. That way, we can also take care of late sign-ups without having to schedule multiple equipment dates.

Here are the current numbers for football sign-ups. All things considered, it's not too bad. If we do not have full rosters for each grade, some may be combined. If you know of anyone who has not yet signed up, please encourage them to do so asap so that we can finalize scheduling.

Finally, SDK Football & Cheer is back! We thank you for your patience. Please know that we have been working incredibly hard in the background to not only ensure we have a season - but a safe and enjoyable one for all involved.

There are some important things that you will need to understand that are different than in past years of football and cheer. Please take the time to read this email in its entirety before signing up.

  • Registration will be open until July 20th. An early registration discount will be in place until July 1st.
  • A modified payment plan is available for those who wish to utilize it. There is a $50 down payment, and the remaining balance will be spread out over two deductions (7/30 and 8/30)
  • In the event that the state of Ohio cancels the seasons prior to September 1st, we will refund registration fees, minus the cost of the football jersey (for football) and insurance premiums (which are due August 1). Players will be given the football jerseys to keep. After September 1, no refunds will be issued.
  • There are family discounts for multiple children participating in the same sport. This does not apply to those who have one child in football and one in cheer.
  • There will not be uniform fittings for football as in past years for obvious reasons. We will have a limited number of jerseys available for you to "view" and make changes as needed. Stay tuned for more information on this topic.
  • We will be in need of several parent volunteers to help with screenings prior to each practice / game. Players / Cheerleaders will have their temperatures taken and asked prescreening questions. If you are interested in helping out, please sign up with the coaches registration and select volunteer from the dropdown box when prompted.
  • Equipment handout will take place on Sunday, July 19th from noon - 1:30. We will provide specific timeslots and information in future communications.
  • Every player must have active physical submitted by the time official practices begin or the player will not be able to practice with the team. Cheerleaders do not need to have a physical.


PEE-WEES

  • We are still awaiting clarification from the state of Ohio / SWBL as to when football practices will officially begin. Optional (but recommended) conditioning sessions will take place at Alter on July 6, 9, 13, and 16 from 6 - 7:30 PM at Alter. Detailed information will be forthcoming on this.
  • In order to participate in peewee football (grades 3-6), you must be registered at Incarnation, St. Charles, St. Albert or BLS for the 2020-21 school year. No such restrictions exist for 7th or 8th
  • Pee-wee practices and acclimation will officially start August 18th this season because the first game of the season will not begin until September 12. We will have team conditioning the first two weeks of August. Stay tuned for more information on this. The reason the peewees are starting later is because many of the schools in the league have not yet ordered equipment, conditioned helmets, etc. because they did not anticipate a season taking place.
  • Additional peewee information: there will be one weigh-in day this season (no make-up day). If the player does not make this weigh-in day, he/she will not be able to play a skill position. While it is typically the first Saturday in August, we anticipate this date being pushed back because of the SWBL starting games later.

JR HIGH

  • Junior High Practices and acclimation will begin August 1st unless the state of Ohio mandates a change. We have a full schedule for both 7th and 8th In fact, we are overscheduled in the event that some teams opt not to play the season. A special thanks to Tom Doorley for his scheduling efforts.

We are asking for everyone's flexibility and cooperation this year more than any other. The easy path would be simply to cancel the season, but we know what a tradition football and cheer is for the community and we are making every effort to provide a safe environment to "get things a little more back to normal." Please know that every decision we make is in the interest and safety of those participating in the program.
